RC STICKEEN: the story of a dog. by John Muir.
Rivverside Literature Series 231 edition of Muir's classic "icy storm-story". Copyright is 1909 (date of 1st edition elsewhere) but although no other direct information is given within this printing, there are clues in the preface that the printing date was not before 1915. This Rivrside Literature Series lasted decades and besides Stickeen by Muir included many other works by writers such as Longfellow, Emerson, Thoreau, Shakespear, Iving, Poe and more. To be included in this list demonstrates the importance given to Muir's dog story. The fact that its first edition went through at least 24 printings is another testimony, and it has been reprinted more recently as well. There was also a paperback format of the Riverside edition. The cloth version listed here appears to be exceedingly rare; at least in this lister's searching. It might be thought that this edition has less merit, but not only does it include all of Muir's material but an extensive anonymous biography introduces the man to those who might not know his entire story. Too, after the dog story there is a section of "Notes" keyed to its pages that give background to elements with which a reader not might be familiar, giving the story greater context. And afer the notes is a section of "Questions and Suggestions" also keyed to pages that provide topics for discussion and could be used in an educational setting.
This is John Muir's story of a dog named Stickeen (after a tribe of Indians at Fort Wrangel, Alaska [now Wrangell) with whom a bond of exploration and appreciation developed as they together explored wilds of Alaska, culminating in a life-threatening episode during a storm while exploring the Brady Glacier in what is now Glacier Bay National Park. Francis H. Allen wrote in a preface to one of the many issues of this book, "Stickeen is one of the best dog stories ever written,..[I]t opens a window into the heart and soul of a dog, so that we can see how much like a man he is in some respects and can sympathize with him." Published by Houghton Mifflin Company of Boston and New York. Size is 4 3/4 in. by 7.5 in., cloth bound in green covers with "Riverside Literature Series", "Muir's Stickeen", and "Houghton Mifflin Co." printed on the front cover along with a column design.
